About Us
Cleaver is a store where every purchase gets refunded, making the total cost of the transaction balance out to zero - in other words - free.
Cleaver is:
- A shop where you can buy interesting things, mostly books, antiques and video games at the moment.
- Almost all the initial stock is made up of the personal possessions of the founder of the Hackitalism project.
- An historic social/business experiment that aims to make every purchase on this site a net-zero expense for 'buyers'.
- Net-zero expense means that ultimately everything purchased here costs you nothing in terms of money. Any time you put into the Hackitalism project is purely voluntary but you'll probably find it's fun and in your financial interest to participate.
- Refunds are made possible through the Hackitalism project.
- The economics of refunding purchases make sense after factoring in the value of the projects carried out on Hackitalism.com.
- A recruitment tool for Hackitalism.com.
- Hackitalism works better with the participation of many creative, informed and talented people.
- Effort put into Hackitalism is paid effort - the value you regain by having your purchase cost refunded - and possibly more than that.
- Evolving and getting better thanks to the active participation of its customers in determining its future. Cleaver customers become managers of the Hackitalism project, and by extension the Cleaver store.
How it works: (maybe this should be first?)

What are the catches?
[add this to FAQ I think] [[There are a few different ways to think about your purchase at Cleaver. You could consider it a loan (made to Hackitalism). The principal is the cost of the item you "buy". The interest of the loan is pre-paid up front in the form of the item you receive from the Cleaver store.
You could think of it as an investment where the item you purchase is a security. When the purchase price is paid back you earn 100% on your initial investment. However it's important to keep in mind that from a legal point of view you are neither lending money nor investing in the Hackitalism Project. That doesn't mean that you won't be able to invest in Hackitalism, for real, in the future. The management of the company is determined by its supporters and customers. ]]
